About Us

We're a club for Japanese international students, for students studying Japanese and for people who are interested in Japan. We are affiliated with the University of Melbourne Student Union.

The club holds a variety of social and cultural activities throughout the year (see our photo page): our events are friendly and relaxed, and our main goal is for our members to enjoy themselves! Our events also provide opportunities for members to interact with others sharing an interest in Japan, to further their understanding of Japan, and to gain another perspective on their studies of Japan and the Japanese language.

The structure of the club and its regulations are outlined in the club's constitution.

Common Questions

Who can join?

Membership is open to all students and staff of The University of Melbourne. Everyone else is more than welcome to join as associate members.

How do I join?

Yearly membership is $3 for non-student union members and $1 for student union members.

Come to a club event and tell the person in charge that you'd like to become a member. Alternatively, visit level 2 in the Sidney Myer Asia Centre and get an envelope and membership form and follow the instructions provided. Please do not send emails requesting membership, since we need to collect money off you somehow and we can't collect money via email.

Another way is to look out for our signup table at O-Week.

What do members get?

Does the club have regular meetings?

Every week during semester we hold 3-5 events. See our homepage for event details.
The club holds its Annual General Meeting (AGM) early in first semester; AGM details are publicised in Student Union news bulletins.

How big is the club?

We have over 300 members.

How can I get involved in the running of the club?

Please contact us now and say that you'd like to help out organising events (enquiries@mujc.org.au).
All committee places are open for election at the AGM each year, and the club encourages all members to attend the AGM and run for a position if they wish to contribute to the club.

How is the club funded?

A substantial amount of the club's funding comes from the student union. The remainder of our funding comes from fundraising and sponsorship. The club is non-profit and committee members work as volunteers, receiving no remuneration.
